Homeschool piano lessons you can teach with no music background

You don't need to play piano to start your 3 to 6 year old on piano at home. Toddler Piano Book Level 1 uses a natural language approach, so there is very little reading or writing, and video tutorials show you how to teach each page. You learn the same listening and keyboard skills right alongside your child.

How it fits a homeschool day

  • 10–15 minutes a day. Short enough to fit between other subjects, and short sessions suit young children best.
  • Same time, same routine. Listen and copy, look and play, tap the rhythm, climb the tempo ladder, celebrate.
  • Progress you can see. Your child circles finished pages or draws a smiley face, and moves from tempo ladder #1 (40–60) toward #5 (90–100).

The full routine is on my 10–15 minute parent–child routine page.

What your child learns in Level 1

Ear training and listening, playing and exploring the whole keyboard, and matching visual patterns up and down the instrument, plus rhythm and steady tempo.

  • Rhythm instruction page and song and technique instruction page
  • Montuno Prep: moving up and down (U/D) and left and right (L/R) on the keyboard
  • Hot Cup of Tea: a word rhythm with quarter notes and a triplet
  • Sing & Play: Hot Cross Buns and Mary Had a Little Lamb, both hands
  • Look & Play: 5-note patterns, hands together. “Use your eyes, always count up or down.”
  • Tempo ladder: #1 (40–60) up to #5 (90–100)

Pages are front and back, laminated, spiral bound and dry-erase. Dry-erase markers are included, and video tutorials show how to teach each page.

Several children and homeschool co-ops

Siblings. The pages are dry-erase, so children can take turns with one book and wipe it clean between them, or each child can have their own copy.

Co-ops. A co-op can run a short preschool piano class with each family taking the book home to repeat the page during the week. For 10 or more copies, request a quote.

Questions homeschool parents ask

Can I teach piano at home if I don't play?

Yes. Toddler Piano Book is written for parents with no music background. The natural language approach keeps reading to a minimum, and video tutorials show how to teach each page. You learn alongside your child.

What is a good homeschool piano curriculum for preschoolers?

For ages 3–6, choose one built on listening, rhythm and short daily sessions rather than reading notes. Toddler Piano Book Level 1 covers ear training, rhythm, steady tempo and keyboard patterns in 10–15 minutes a day.

How many days a week should my child practice?

It is designed as a short daily routine of 10–15 minutes. Some days five good minutes is enough. Stop while it is still fun.

Can siblings share one book?

Yes. The pages are dry-erase, so each child can do a page and wipe it clean for the next. Or give each child their own copy.

What instrument does a child need?

An acoustic piano or a full-size keyboard. A higher-quality instrument is best, because so much of Level 1 is listening, and full-size keys let a child explore patterns up and down the whole keyboard.

Will I need any other materials?

Yes, two things. First, a metronome. I recommend a wind-up (mechanical) metronome. If you don't have one, free phone apps or web metronome apps work, for the sound only. Second, something to clean off the dry-erase marker writing.

How much do 10 or more copies cost?

Bulk orders are quoted per order. Tap “Request a quote for 10+ copies” and send your name, organization, number of copies, ship-to city and state, and the date you need them, and I'll reply with a quote. A single copy is $129.
